Williamstown Petitions the Politburo for the Right to Ban Its Own Rat Poison

Commissar John Barrett III of the 1st Berkshire district has filed HD.6210, a home rule petition authorizing the town of Williamstown to prohibit the sale and use of second generation anticoagulant rodenticides — the class of long-acting blood-thinning poisons responsible for mass secondary poisoning of raptors, foxes, and other wildlife that consume contaminated rodents.

Under the Commonwealth Soviet’s current regulatory structure, pesticide authority rests with the state. Williamstown cannot act unilaterally; it requires explicit dispensation from the People’s Legislature to govern its own poison supply. The town has already granted local approval — meaning the people have spoken — and now awaits permission from Boston to do what Boston has not done itself.

The beneficiaries are owls, hawks, fishers, and any Berkshire County mammal that eats a rat without first consulting a toxicologist. The regulated parties are the hardware stores and pest control operators who stock brodifacoum, bromadiolone, and related compounds — chemicals the EPA has restricted for consumer use since 2011, yet which remain legal at the professional and municipal level statewide.
